Release of G. ashmeadi in Tahiti

- Release decision

Available data on native species and potential non-target impacts were presented to the Council of Ministers and the Conservation Committee (composed of representatives from: Commission of Natural Monuments and Sites, The Environment, Research, Tourism and Equipment Ministries, etc.) in April 2005 for a decision to release G. ashmeadi in French Polynesia against H. coagulata in May 2005.

The French Polynesian Government considered that the benefits of controlling H. coagulata with G. ashmeadi outweighed possible negative ecological impacts on native species and decided releases G. ashmeadi from quarantine for liberation and establishment in the field should be initiated in May 2005.

- Releases on experimental sites

The first experimental releases of G. ashmeadi commenced on May 2, 2005 in Tahiti in Papenoo, on the north end of Tahiti.

Monitoring of released parasitoids permitted assessment of parasitoid establishment, dispersion, and parasitism rates. Collection of these data were necessary to evaluate the effectiveness of G. ashmeadi releases against GWSS.

- Global release

On September 2005, releases of G. ashmeadi began in the whole island of Tahiti. A total of 14,000 parasitoïds have been released in 27 sites located around the island (except in the South Western part of the island where control sites (i.e., non-release sites) were located). Transportation areas like the airport and the main seaport zones were treated first with parasitoids to reduce propagation of GWSS thereby, minimizing risk of spread to other uninfested regions.
